Carnival 2024 doesn’t kick off until Saturday, January 6, but Dong Phuong king cake preorders are already fully booked up for the season. Last year, the famed New Orleans East bakery sold out just a week into Carnival, which set a new record — but this year is one of the shortest seasons in recent memory, just 39 days, with Mardi Gras falling on February 13, 2024. Luckily, there are still plenty of opportunities for New Orleanians (and beyond) to get their Dong Phuong king cake fix.
Here’s what to know: Dong Phuong opened up online orders for king cake pickup throughout the 2024 season yesterday, New Year’s Day, and available slots were sold out within a few hours. Shipping orders opened even earlier, and there is currently a waitlist for that option, with the bakery telling WWL that it expects to open up more dates at the end of January for February shipping.
There is also the walk-in option. The first Dong Phuong king cakes will be sold in-store beginning Wednesday, January 3, according to the bakery’s website. From there, king cakes are available for walk-in purchase every day except Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m., with a limit of three cakes per customer, until sold out (Dong Phuong says it generally sells out by noon, but the bakery is open until 5 p.m.).
So where else can one buy the highly-sought DP king cake in 2024? More than two dozen restaurants and bakeries in the region, actually, as far as Baton Rouge and Waveland, Mississippi. In New Orleans, spots like Bourree, Adams Street Grocery, Killer Poboys, and Mr. Bubbles on the West Bank all receive deliveries, per Dong Phuong. If you want to avoid striking out at one of the below locations, however, you’ll want to arrive close to opening or call the business directly to check their stock. They will also be sold on Goldbelly once the season officially starts, where basic cinnamon goes for a whopping $75 and comes unassembled — meaning you have to apply the icing and sprinkles, packaged separately, as is typical (but not preferable) with many shipped king cakes.
