A status update of what’s open, what’s closed, and how neighborhood restaurants are navigating power outages as of Friday, September 13

Two days after Hurricane Francine made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 storm, access to power in New Orleans remains all over the map. Quite literally — in neighborhoods across the city, one block may have its power up and running while the next block over is dark. As of Friday, September 13, Tropical Storm Francine has weakened to a tropical depression after making landfall in Louisiana this week as a Category 2 hurricane, according to multiple news reports. While Francine has now been recategorized as a tropical depression, efforts continue by utility crews to restore power to the hundreds of customers who lost electricity following this week’s devastation.

On Thursday, September 12, Pizza Delicious on Piety Street in the Bywater neighborhood was about as busy as it gets, with wait times of up to an hour for a custom takeout pizza. One block upriver on Louisa Street, however, Sneaky Pickle was still without electricity, remaining shuttered since losing power on Wednesday, September 11. As of Friday, Sneaky Pickle is still without power, but the funky neighborhood restaurant, known for its creative treatment of vegetables, is getting creative in other ways. In the afternoon, chef and owner Ben Tabor hauled his pizza oven and flat top outside on the sidewalk, selling a limited menu of to-go food as well as wine, beer, and other beverages. “We were starting to get impatient just sitting around and waiting to get [power] back,” Tabor says.
