Seasonal sandwiches from Bywater Bakery, Killer PoBoys, and of course, Parkway are back

The legendary Thanksgiving “Poor Boy” (not po’ boy) from New Orleans’s Parkway Bakery & Tavern has been a cult classic since its debut 15 years ago, forcing the sandwich shop to come up with inventive ways to reduce lines and accommodate customer orders in years past. Other local spots have since garnered annual anticipation for Thanksgiving-themed sandwiches, from Stanley’s post-holiday leftovers croissant to Dat Dog’s annual Turducken sausage holiday dog. Here are five sandwiches to satisfy pre-Thanksgiving cravings in New Orleans right now.

Bakery Bar

The new and improved Bakery Bar has a handful of eye-catching Thanksgiving treats on the menu this year, including a dessert cocktail made with brandy, pumpkin, allspice, and cinnamon and two seasonal doberge cake flavors: sweet potato spiced latte and apple brandy pie. There’s also a special Leftovers Sandwich, French bread stuffed with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and thyme mayo and served with a side of brown gravy for dipping. All the specials are available Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Bywater Bakery

Chaya Conrad’s Thanksgiving sandwich at Bywater Bakery is pure bliss, from the umami goodness of cranberry sauce bright with citrus to the slow-roasted, juicy turkey and buttery bread stuffing cubed from Conrad’s country white bread. Did we say it’s swimming in a pool of gravy? It’s available through November 22.

Dat Dog

The annual turducken hot dog from the gourmet ‘dog shop is another popular local option, combining turducken sausage, cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, andouille sauce, and green onions. It’s available and all three locations (Magazine Street, Freret Street, and Frenchmen) and until late (midnight during the week, and 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday) on Frenchmen Street.

Killer PoBoys

The always-creative Killer PoBoys has its own version of a Thanksgiving po’ boy it calls The Gobbler, and it’s fully loaded — roasted turkey, ham, sweet potato mash, green bean and mushroom “casserole” complete with crispy fried onions, and cranberry satsuma mayo. It’s available beginning this week, Wednesday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Parkway Bakery and Tavern

Parkway’s annual Thanksgiving Poor Boy drives New Orleanians wild, resulting in hour-long waits and lines out to the bayou every Wednesday between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in November. This year, there’s a way to skip the line and support a good cause at the same time — a $100 ”Skip the Line” ticket supports the Al Copeland foundation, buying you an instant Thanksgiving Poor Boy as well a t-shirt, sweet potato fries, a lemonade, and a pumpkin spice ice cream sandwich. Tickets can be purchased online or onsite every Wednesday at Parkway, or brave the line — it’s sure to be festive.
